Tournament Recap 🏌️

Spaun’s Resilience Shines in US Open Triumph

The 2025 US Open at Oakmont Country Club delivered a grueling test, with rain-soaked conditions and a beastly course exposing every weakness in the field.

J.J. Spaun emerged as the champion, posting a final score of -1 to claim his first major title. His performance was a masterclass in resilience. After a disastrous front nine in the final round, where he carded a +5 with five bogeys in six holes, Spaun regrouped during a weather delay and tore through the back nine with four birdies, including a pinpoint tee shot on the drivable par-four 17th that set up a two-putt birdie.

His 65-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole—a downhill, snaking bomb—was the longest putt of the week and sealed the victory in dramatic fashion.

Spaun’s ability to stay composed while others faltered on a saturated, punishing Oakmont deserves immense credit.

Noteworthy Stories ✍🏻

MacIntyre’s Grit and Grace at the Major

Robert MacIntyre deserves praise for his gritty final-round 68, one of only two under-par scores in the top ten on Sunday.

The Scot’s steady play down the stretch earned him a solo second at +1, a career-best major finish. His sportsmanship, seen in his genuine applause for Spaun’s winning putt, was a highlight.

Final-Round Fizzles: Scott and Burns Fade Under Pressure

Adam Scott and Sam Burns, paired in the final group, couldn’t find their form under the pressure and conditions. Scott, who briefly co-led, unraveled with a back-nine collapse, shooting a 79.

Burns, the 54-hole leader, struggled with a 78, including a double bogey on 15. Both players faded when the moment demanded precision, a stark contrast to Spaun’s surge.

Scheffler’s Ball-Striking Shines, But Putter Holds Him Back

Scottie Scheffler stayed in contention with back-to-back 70s over the weekend, finishing T7 at +4.

He gave himself plenty of birdie looks but was plagued by lip-outs and a costly three-putt bogey from short range on the eighth. His ball-striking kept him alive, but the putter let him down when it mattered.

McIlroy’s Frustration Boils Over at +7 Finish

Rory McIlroy’s week was overshadowed by his behavior, continuing a troubling trend since his Masters win.

He was visibly frustrated, throwing clubs, smashing a tee marker after a wayward drive on 17, and brushing off media with curt responses like, “I don’t want to talk to you.”

His final-round 67 was a bright spot, but at +7 (T19), he was never a factor.

McIlroy’s standoffish demeanor and angry outbursts are eroding fan support, and questions linger about what’s happening off the course.

Ryder Cup Race Heats Up After Spaun’s Winning Moment

Spaun’s victory likely punched his ticket to Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup team for Bethpage Black.

Ben Griffin, with a T10 at +5, strengthened his case with another solid major showing.

Sam Burns, despite his Sunday stumble, remains a strong candidate for the US squad.

Bradley himself posted a T33, continuing to play well enough to raise the question: will he select himself?

The American Ryder Cup team is starting to take shape, with depth and form emerging at the right time.

The PGA Tour moves straight into a Signature Event this week at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.

Expect a birdie-fest on the shorter, less penal layout, with Scheffler, McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele headlining a stacked field.

The event offers a $20 million purse and a chance for players to build momentum before The Open at Royal Portrush.
