Tournament Recap 🏌️

Cameron Young’s Breakthrough Blowout at the Wyndham Championship
After years of near-misses and seven runner-up finishes, Cameron Young finally claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship, and he did it in style.
The 28-year-old Wake Forest alum dominated Sedgefield Country Club, finishing at 22-under par to tie the tournament record and win by six shots.
Young started the final round with a five-shot lead, wobbled with an opening bogey, but then unleashed five straight birdies to crush the field. His calm response to Nico Echavarria’s fist-pumping birdie on the third—a 25-foot birdie putt of his own—set the tone for a rout.
This win, making Young the 1,000th unique PGA Tour winner, vaulted him from No. 40 to No. 16 in the FedEx Cup standings, boosting his Ryder Cup hopes for Bethpage Black, where he set a course record as an amateur in 2017. “I’ve been waiting for this for a while,” Young said, visibly emotional. “I wasn’t going to let it get away today.”
Congrats, Cam—here’s to many more.

Noteworthy Stories ✍🏻

Miyu Yamashita Shines as Japan’s Latest Major Champion
The AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl crowned another Japanese star, as Miyu Yamashita captured her first major title, continuing Japan’s strong run in women’s golf.
Yamashita held off a charging Charley Hull to claim the prestigious championship, becoming the sixth Japanese player to lead the field that week, per the LPGA. Her victory adds to the growing legacy of Japanese golfers on the global stage.
Royal Porthcawl in Wales proved a spectacular and challenging host. The course’s rugged links layout, combined with unpredictable weather—think swirling winds and occasional rain—tested players’ precision and adaptability.
The par-3 5th hole stole the show, with Steph Kyriacou’s near-ace setting up Mimi Rhodes’ stunning hole-in-one.
Yamashita’s composure under pressure on this demanding track marks her as a name to watch.

Farewell to a Legend: Ian Baker-Finch Retires from Broadcasting
The golf world said goodbye to a beloved voice as Ian Baker-Finch, the 1991 Open Championship winner, retired from CBS Sports after 19 years in the booth.
Baker-Finch, who called his final event at the Wyndham Championship, was praised for his insightful commentary and warm presence over three decades.
His final call, narrating Cameron Young’s winning moment, was a fitting send-off. “He’s been a class act for so long,” said lead host Jim Nantz.
Fans and colleagues will miss his expertise and charm. As for his replacement, speculation is rife—could a rising broadcaster like Colt Knost step up, or might CBS tap a former player with a ton of commentary experience like Brandel Chamblee?
Chamblee is a current Golf Channel analyst, and is known for his insightful and articulate commentary, often providing in-depth analysis of the golf swing and strategy.
His experience on “Live From” broadcasts and his ability to engage audiences with thoughtful, sometimes bold opinions make him a compelling choice to step into a prominent role at CBS. His familiarity with television and strong presence could seamlessly complement the existing team, including Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman.

FedEx Cup Playoffs Preview: Who’s In, Who’s Out, Who’s on the Bubble
The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs kick off this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, with the top 70 players in the standings battling at TPC Southwind.
Next week, the field narrows to the top 50 at the BMW Championship, and only the top 30 advance to the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta, where a massive $18 million bonus awaits the winner.
Scottie Scheffler, fresh off his Open Championship win, leads the pack, but big names like Max Homa (No. 106), Adam Scott (No. 85), and Tom Kim (No. 89) missed the playoff cut after lackluster seasons, with Homa’s inconsistency despite a T5 at the John Deere proving costly.
Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele, the PGA Championship winner and No. 4 in last year’s FedEx Cup, is in danger of missing the Tour Championship, sitting at No. 41 after a runner-up at the Wells Fargo but no wins since May 2024.
With 2,000 points up for grabs in Memphis, expect movement—players like Rickie Fowler (No. 64) and Jason Day (No. 37) also need strong weeks to reach East Lake.
